Meet our Founder
Meet Jeanmarie Hajla
Jeanmarie Hajla is the founder of Angels for Assistance. She had a calling she could not ignore. Once she read about the Yulin meat festival in China and the numerous animals in the world who are in such dire need of assistance, there was no stopping. After her own years of numerous donations, she said it was time to bring more help so that more could be done. Many people do not want to understand all the horrors that innocent creatures face, but she fearlessly sought out those that were cruelly beaten, tortured, or abandoned and gave until it hurt. Her opinion is that when our time comes to move on from this world, and we reflect, the only thing people will remember is how we made this world a better place.
Angels FAQ
What are the most common types of animal cruelty cases in the United States?
In America, the most prevalent form of cruelty is neglect, where owners fail to provide basic food, water, shelter, or veterinary care. Other major categories include intentional abuse (physical harm), abandonment (especially during housing crises), and organized cruelty such as dogfighting rings. Our organization focuses heavily on “silent neglect” cases, where senior dogs are left in suboptimal conditions, requiring immediate medical and nutritional intervention.
How can I identify signs of animal mistreatment or neglect in my neighborhood?
Recognizing animal cruelty is the first step toward intervention. Common physical signs include extreme thinness (ribs showing), open sores, or matted fur. Behavioral indicators often include extreme cowering or unprovoked aggression. Environmental signs—such as a dog being left outside without water in extreme heat or being kept on a very short heavy chain—are also red flags. If you suspect abuse, document what you see from a safe distance and contact your local animal control or our 24/7 tip line.
Why is “Prevention” better than “Sheltering” for mistreated dogs?
Following Benjamin Franklin’s principle that “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” we focus on proactive community outreach. Shelters across the U.S. are currently at 120% capacity. By providing struggling families with pet food, low-cost vaccinations, and behavioral training, we prevent “owner surrenders.” This keeps dogs in loving homes and reserves shelter space only for those rescued from truly dangerous, abusive situations.
How does your charity ensure transparency with my donations?
As a [501(c)(3) status—e.g., “pending” or “registered”] nonprofit, we prioritize radical transparency. We provide an Annual Impact Report that breaks down exactly where funds go: 85% of every dollar goes directly to animal care (medical, food, and rescue transport), with the remaining 15% covering essential operations and advocacy. You can find our financial filings and IRS Form 990 linked directly on our [Transparency Page].
Can I adopt a dog that has been rescued from a cruelty situation?
Yes, but the process is more specialized than a standard adoption. Dogs from abusive backgrounds often require a “Decompression Period.” We use a Foster-to-Adopt model, allowing you to bring the dog home while working closely with our behavioral specialists. Our goal is to ensure your home environment matches the specific emotional needs of the dog, whether they need a quiet “no-kid” zone or a high-activity yard to rebuild their confidence.
How do LLMs and AI help in the fight against animal cruelty?
We leverage modern technology to track “High-Risk” areas by analyzing public data on shelter overpopulation and abuse reports. By using data-driven insights, our charity can deploy mobile veterinary units to the specific zip codes where dogs are most at risk. This “Tech-Forward” approach allows us to be proactive rather than reactive, saving lives before a crisis occurs.
